Attention Part-time summer vacation, peak season and single day vacation coverage Package Car Drivers.

2/14/2012

It was recently brought to our attention that a number of permanent part-time UPS members working on a temporary basis in the above cited classifications may not have received proper part-time pension credit for those time periods working as Package Car Drivers.

We have been assured that in addition to identifying the members affected and correcting those arrears the issue have been rectified and will not be a problem going forward.

However our advice is talk with your supervisor and (or) contact the UPS Pension Plan at 1-800-643-4442 in order to ensure that...

Attention Package Car Drivers

2/10/2012

Package Car Drivers (Service Providers) RE: All packages out for delivery must have a disposition.

FYI – Any package not delivered or not attempted to be delivered, (O/A’s misloads, missed, etc) must be entered in your DIAD and called into your center office. As evidenced by two (2) recent incidents that method is not universally known or more likely not always followed. DO NOT put yourself in a position of burying a package in your load, throwing it on the belt or whatever because you haven’t accounted for an O/A misload or missed by either delivering it or calling in. Put...

UPS Feeder Drivers

2/03/2012

As I am sure your aware, UPS has re-implemented the use of 53 foot containers and trailer chassis assemblies in their rail movements

Please know that we have been engaged in ongoing discussions with the employer regarding certain safety related concerns brought about as a result of this action.

One concern was about the additional weight of the container/trailer combinations coupled with the use of single axle tractors creating possible roadway weight restriction violations and associated performance and handling issues.

It has more recently been brought to our...

Good News for UPS Employees

9/09/2011

You'll be happy to know that not all the news on the economic front is negative. For all UPS employees, in addition to the negotiated increases effective August 1, 2011 (42.5 cents), we have just been notified that the cost of living allowance (COLA) will provide another 12 cents per hour.

Important Grievance Panel Decision - Vacations

8/30/2011

Recently the JAC Deadlock Committee (Article 5 – Grievance Section 3, CRS pp 192-193) rendered a very important decision affecting many our of members. The question and issue was – do paid vacations and holidays, earned and taken, count as hours worked toward the future accrual of the 1250 for full time, or 625 for part time, for vacation eligibility purposes?

The decision and answer was a resounding YES. This is especially significant for some of our members who, for whatever reasons, are often close or just short of the necessary hours to receive a full complement of...

Contract Enforcement - UPDATE

8/30/2011

Technological changes do NOT negate UPS's contractual obligations. Case in point: Recent changes in the Minneapolis Small Sort (Next Generation Small Sort) have eliminated the need for small sort sorters to "know the sort." Sorters scan the bar codes on the small packages and the corresponding bin lights up indicating which bin to sort to.

The company took the position that because 'sort knowledge' was no longer necessary, the additional dollar would no longer be paid to new sorters.

The Union's position (and grievance) is that a sorter is a sorter, regardless of...

UPS Building Heat – UPDATE

8/26/2011

Prior to the scheduled trial date in July, UPS requested adding another line of defense to their argument. UPS attorneys added 'unfeasibility' to their list and submitted it to the administrative law judge for her approval. Unfortunately, the judge sided with UPS, and has set aside approximately five months for additional discovery, interrogatories etc., thus pushing the trial date into December.

It seems odd that UPS would attempt this line of defense. After years of maintaining the higher temperature reading, they will now try to prove it's not feasible. We will keep you...

It's Never Okay to Sign for a Package

8/26/2011

FYI – all package car drivers in Minnesota and North Dakota. We have in the last several months had a couple of drivers disciplined for signing for packages. UPS considers this an act of dishonesty and acts accordingly. Make no mistake – there are no situations where it is okay to sign for the customer's packages, even if they have requested that you do so. Remember, the shipper is paying the bill, and has not assented to allow you, the driver, to sign for the package.
